Invalid Card Number

hard decline Do not retry

The card number (PAN) does not correspond to any known card in the issuer's system. The number may have been entered incorrectly, or the card may have been replaced with a new number.

Why does code 14 occur?

  • Typographical error in card number entry
  • Card was replaced and old number is no longer valid
  • Test card number used in a production environment
  • Luhn check failure — number is not mathematically valid

Can this transaction be retried?

No, code 14 is a hard decline and should not be retried. The underlying issue is permanent and the same card details will continue to be declined. Ask the customer for an alternative payment method.

What merchants should do

Ask the customer to re-enter their card number carefully. Run a Luhn check on your side before submitting. If this is a stored card, the number may have changed — use an account updater service.

What cardholders should do

Double-check your card number and try again. If you recently received a replacement card, the number may have changed. Use the new card.
