Expired Card

hard decline Do not retry

The card has passed its expiration date and can no longer be used for transactions. The issuer has likely sent a replacement card with a new expiration date.

Why does code 54 occur?

  • Card past its printed expiration date
  • Replacement card issued but customer is still using old card details
  • Incorrect expiry date entered at checkout (e.g., swapped month/year)
  • Stored card credentials not updated after card renewal

Can this transaction be retried?

No, code 54 is a hard decline and should not be retried. The underlying issue is permanent and the same card details will continue to be declined. Ask the customer for an alternative payment method.

What merchants should do

Ask the customer to provide their new card details. If you store cards for recurring billing, use an account updater service to automatically receive updated expiry dates from card networks.

What cardholders should do

Check your card's expiration date printed on the front. If it has expired, contact your bank for a replacement card or check if one was already mailed to you.
