CVV2/CVC2 Mismatch

soft decline Retryable

The card verification value (CVV2 for Visa, CVC2 for Mastercard) entered does not match the value on file with the issuing bank. The 3 or 4-digit security code was incorrect.

Why does code N7 occur?

  • Mistyped CVV/CVC security code
  • Using the CVV from an old or expired card
  • Virtual card with a dynamic CVV that has rotated
  • Card-on-file with outdated CVV after card replacement

Can this transaction be retried?

Yes, code N7 is a soft, retryable decline. You can retry the transaction after a delay of 24-48 hours. Card networks typically allow up to 15 retries (Visa) or 10 retries (Mastercard) per billing cycle for soft declines. Use exponential backoff to space out retries.

What merchants should do

Ask the customer to re-enter the CVV/CVC code from the back of their physical card (or front for Amex). Do not store CVV values — they must be entered fresh each time. Consider this a potential fraud indicator if it happens repeatedly.

What cardholders should do

Check the 3-digit code on the back of your Visa/Mastercard (or 4-digit code on the front of your Amex) and re-enter it carefully. If you're using a virtual card, check your banking app for the current CVV.
