System Malfunction

soft decline Retryable

A system error has occurred somewhere in the payment processing chain — at the processor, network, or issuer. This is a temporary technical failure unrelated to the card or account.

Why does code 96 occur?

  • Payment processor or gateway experiencing a system error
  • Network timeout during authorization message routing
  • Database connectivity issue at issuer or acquirer
  • Hardware or infrastructure failure at a point in the processing chain

Can this transaction be retried?

Yes, code 96 is a soft, retryable decline. You can retry the transaction after a delay of 24-48 hours. Card networks typically allow up to 15 retries (Visa) or 10 retries (Mastercard) per billing cycle for soft declines. Use exponential backoff to space out retries.

What merchants should do

Retry the transaction after a 30-60 second delay. If the issue persists after 2-3 retries, contact your payment processor for status updates. This may indicate a broader platform issue.

What cardholders should do

This is a temporary system error in the payment network. Wait a minute and try again. The issue is not related to your card or account balance.
