Understanding Bank Identification Numbers
A BIN (Bank Identification Number) — also known as an IIN (Issuer Identification Number) — is the first 6 to 8 digits of a payment card number. Every Visa, Mastercard, American Express, and Discover card starts with a BIN that uniquely identifies the issuing institution.
BINs are assigned by card networks and used by payment processors, fraud detection systems, and merchants to route transactions, validate cards, and assess risk. A BIN lookup reveals:
- Card network — Visa, Mastercard, Amex, Discover, UnionPay, JCB, etc.
- Card type — Debit, credit, or prepaid
- Issuing bank — The financial institution that issued the card
- Country of issuance — Where the issuing bank is based
BIN data is public and shared across millions of cards. Entering a BIN does not expose any personal or account information. The remaining digits of a card number identify the specific account and include a check digit validated by the Luhn algorithm.
