Lost Card

hard decline Do not retry

The card has been reported as lost by the cardholder. The issuer has permanently blocked the card, and all transactions will be declined until a replacement is issued.

Why does code 41 occur?

  • Cardholder reported the card as lost to their issuer
  • Bank proactively blocked the card after detecting it in a compromised card database
  • Card not received by cardholder and reported as lost in transit

Can this transaction be retried?

No, code 41 is a hard decline and should not be retried. The underlying issue is permanent and the same card details will continue to be declined. Ask the customer for an alternative payment method.

What merchants should do

Do not process the transaction. In a face-to-face scenario, retain the card if safely possible. Do not retry — this card is permanently blocked. If you have this card on file for recurring billing, remove it.

What cardholders should do

If this is your card and it was not lost, contact your bank immediately — someone else may have reported it. If you did report it lost, request a replacement card with a new number.
