Partial Approval

soft decline Do not retry

The issuer approved the transaction for a partial amount, less than the original request. The remaining balance must be paid with another method. This is not a full decline — it is a split-tender response.

Why does code 10 occur?

  • Prepaid card with balance lower than transaction amount
  • Gift card with insufficient remaining value
  • Debit card with limited available balance
  • Issuer-imposed partial authorization due to account restrictions

Can this transaction be retried?

Code 10 is a soft decline, but it is not automatically retryable. The cardholder typically needs to take action (such as contacting their bank) before the transaction can succeed. Do not retry automatically — wait for the cardholder to resolve the underlying issue.

What merchants should do

Check if your terminal supports partial approvals. If so, collect the remaining balance via another payment method. If partial approvals are not supported, void the partial auth and ask the customer for full payment via another method.

What cardholders should do

Your card was approved for part of the amount. You will need to pay the remaining balance with another card or payment method.
